As ‘Flight100,’ the world’s first 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) transatlantic commercial flight gets ready for take-off, BritishAmerican Business has
released a report which examines how the UK and the US can support the aviation industry’s push towards net zero emissions.
Led by Virgin Atlantic and supported by the Department for Transport, the flight has involved a number of companies including Boeing, Rolls-Royce and BP to demonstrate that SAF is the right alternative to regular jet fuel.
SAF is critical for aviation’s net-zero transition, with over 450,000 flights globally having used up to 50% SAF. However, this transatlantic commercial flight represents the first to be entirely powered by SAF, proving that deeply decarbonised aircraft operations are possible.
High production costs have hindered widespread SAF adoption to date, but ongoing government support and industry collaboration aim to address affordability challenges and promote further investment in SAF projects.
The report, launched in conjunction with the historic flight, assesses the current state of SAF viability and immediate challenges hindering widespread adoption across the industry. The report also suggests recommendations for the US and the UK to cement leadership in this rapidly growing market, including a price mechanism to scale up SAF and government policies that incentivise R&D and technology readiness.
The flight from London to New York will take place tomorrow, Tuesday 28th November.
